Safeguard Your Home Against Water Damage From Refrigerator

Date

One important technology and a must-have in the kitchen is the refrigerator. Homeowners would even agree about the necessity of having a refrigerator in the home for keeping food safe. However, one of the major causes of water damage to a home is a result of malfunctioning appliances like the refrigerator and ice maker.

Recognize the Signs of Refrigerator Water Damage

There are things you need to check if you are unsure of what is causing your refrigerator leak.

1. Faulty defrost drain

This is one of the common reasons why a refrigerator leaks. When the defrost drain has a blockage because of food particles or ice, the accumulated water doesn’t drain into the pan during the defrost cycle. Water will eventually build up and will begin to flow right onto your floor.

2. Water filter

If your filter doesn’t fit correctly with the model of your refrigerator or if it is not installed properly, chances are there is a poor connection between the filter and the water supply. To prevent your refrigerator from leaking, check to see if water is escaping due to holes in the filter. Also, check the size and model of both the fridge and filter to ensure it’s a perfect match.

3. Drain pan

The drain pan is located at the bottom of the refrigerator. Check the drain pan if there are any cracks. If you observe a significant amount of pooling, it means that the pan has a crack and that is the cause of the leak. Replace the pan right away if you notice any damage.

Reduce the Risk of Water Damage

You can reduce the risk of water damage if you take into consideration the following to ensure proper operation of the refrigerator or ice maker:

1. Locate the water shut-off valve and inspect the valve every six months.

  • -Make sure the water supply will shut off.
  • -Replace the valve if needed.

2. Install the ice maker supply line hose properly to avoid water damage.

3. Tightly connect the hose to the valve but avoid over-tightening.

4. Inspect the hose every six months.

  • -Ensure the valve connection is secure and
  • -Check for kinks. Replace the hose if kinks are present.

5. Leave a three to four inches space between the back of the refrigerator and the wall to prevent the hose from crimping.
